Xbox bringing games to PS5 is fine if one key issue is fixed – TrueAchievements

Microsoft’s new multiplatform plans are great for Xbox fans invested in the platform, but whether or not new players will still be drawn to the console is unclear.
Tom’s take — Xbox’s achievement system and user experience mean more to me than exclusives
If additional funds from launching its games on rival platforms mean we’ll keep getting stellar experiences like Avowed and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, I think. With that said, I do wonder if losing Xbox exclusives could have a negative effect on new players joining the platform, especially when so many areas of the experience have been neglected in recent years. Then I transitioned to the Xbox 360 around halfway through its lifetime, while remaining an avid PC player. Although my brother had Halo, Fable 2, Gears of War, and the like, which I loved playing, it was Xbox’s user experience that drew me to the platform.
The achievements system, Avatars, and the famed “Blades;” it all captured the fun side of gaming for me. I never thought about the exclusive games once because I wanted to be part of that user experience. Now, with Microsoft’s plans to launch its biggest exclusives on rival consoles, it’s going to be more important than ever for the company to improve the overall user experience, especially if it wants to keep attracting new Xbox fans. Now, I’m not ignorant of the fact that exclusive games play a pretty sizable role in selling consoles, but I feel like we’re already seeing the fruits of Microsoft’s multiplatform plans. In the last few months, we’ve had some fantastic first-party games arrive from Microsoft. MachineGames’ Indiana Jones and the Great Circle stole the crown as my favorite game of 2024, Obsidian’s latest RPG blew Heidi away in her Avowed review , and while South of Midnight seems like it has been hit and miss for many players, Compulsion Games was able to tread new waters with a fresh IP.The increased revenue Microsoft is pulling in from launching its games on PlayStation is surely playing a part in those quality experiences, as Microsoft is able to give its teams the resources and time to bring their ideas to life. Just look at Playground Games’ Fable, which has been delayed into 2026 . Instead of needing to rush it out of the door, the team has the best part of another year to perfect the exciting reboot. The same can be said for State of Decay 3, Perfect Dark, and, dare I say, The Elder Scrolls VI.
With a huge library of Xbox Game Pass games to play, a host of incredible IPs in its arsenal, and awesome features like Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming, I’m excited for the future of my favorite gaming platform. How about you? How do you feel about Xbox and its future? Let me know by dropping a comment below!
With development costs heavily on the rise, I think we’re starting to step into a new multiplatform future for Xbox and PlayStation (perhaps not Nintendo, but that’s its own beast). While I’d love to see PlayStation launch its games on Xbox , the company has started releasing its titles on PC, so it’s not only Microsoft trying to pinch those extra pennies. However, it’s going to be more important than ever for Xbox to revisit the achievement system, which has been neglected for far too long, if it hopes to show players that the Xbox platform is worth buying into. Leaving classic systems like achievements to rot is a bad look, especially when achievements have played such a pivotal role in the console’s history. It’s also going to be critical for Microsoft to find a way to incentivize developers to opt in for Xbox Play Anywhere as the company brings the console and PC gaming experience closer together and steps into the handheld market. Although Play Anywhere has been around for a while now, very few developers are using it for their games. For the most part, I think Xbox fans are in for a bright future, no matter how uncertain things seem right now. The next generation of consoles are being worked on, an official handheld is on the way, Activision Blizzard is adding a hefty library of blockbuster titles to Game Pass, and new features like Stream Your Own Game are adding even more value for Ultimate subscribers.
