CLEVELAND, Ohio — Travis Hunter Sr. wasn’t permitted to watch his son accept the Heisman Trophy in December, but he’s allowed to attend the NFL Draft in Green Bay on Thursday, the Palm Beach Post reported.
Hunter Sr. was granted permission “by the courts,” according to the Palm Beach Post, to attend the first round out the draft on Thursday, and return to his hometown of Boynton Beach, Florida, on Friday.
Hunter, widely regarded as the top prospect in the class and a “unicorn” two-way player at receiver and cornerback, is predicted by most to go No. 2 to the Browns, who brought him in for a top 30 visit, and took him to dinner in Boulder, Colorado, April 3 before attending Colorado’s NFL showcase the next day.
Hunter Sr., 39, spent 90 days in the Palm Beach County West Detention Center in Belle Glade, Florida, on gun and drug charges, and was released nine days before the Heisman Trophy ceremony in New York. He was placed on home confinement for the first year of his three-year probation and was unable to attend.
The presence of his dad will mean a lot to Hunter, who dedicated his Heisman speech to him.
“I want to say something to my father,” Hunter said at the ceremony. “He’s not here and wasn’t able to make it but I know you’re watching on TV. Dad, I love you. For all the stuff you went through man … Now look at your oldest son. I did it for you, man.
“All the times that you didn’t get to see me, or the times you did come to see my games. From not seeing probably two games in high school to seeing me on TV every weekend and coming to see me. That means so much to me.
“I know you wanted to be here and you can’t, but trust me, I got you. I’m bringing the trophy home. I love you.”
It promises to be an emotional night for the Browns’ possible No. 2 pick.
