The terror strike in Pahalgam on Tuesday has dealt a severe blow to the domestic tourism industry. Many travellers have cut their trips short to return home, while others are rushing to cancel their advance bookings. Several people in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, who had planned vacations in Kashmir in the coming days are now seeking refunds.
Travel agents in Varanasi, say the sudden cancellations have set their industry back by almost 15 crore rupees. Many fear, the incident will push Kashmir out of the tourism map for the time being and a great effort will be required to recover the losses suffered.
Stakeholders in the tourism industry say, post-Covid, Jammu and Kashmir had positioned itself as a favourite among domestic as well as foreign tourists. It accounts for 7-8 percent of the Union Territory’s GDP and provides direct and indirect employment to lakhs of people.
