DENVER — A second case of measles has been confirmed in Denver.
The Denver Department of Public Health & Environment (DDPHE) and the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) confirmed on Wednesday a case of measles in an adult in Denver.
The new case is a household contact of the first Denver case identified earlier this month. DDPHE said the person has been in public health quarantine during their infectious period.
DDPHE said it has assessed any potential new public exposures while the individual was contagious and determined there is no risk of measles to the public from this new case.
CDPHE previously announced measles cases in Denver, Archuleta County and Pueblo this year.
Measles is a highly contagious, vaccine-preventable disease that can cause severe illness. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a rash that typically starts on the face and spreads.
Health officials said that people who are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated should avoid public gatherings and speak with their health-care provider about receiving the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. The vaccine is 97% effective after two doses, according to health officials.
