Democratic strategist James Carville and DNC Vice Chair David Hogg got into a heated debate Wednesday about Hogg’s plan to unseat incumbent Democrats.
Two weeks ago, Hogg ruffled feathers within the Democratic Party when he announced his plan to spend $20 million to primary elected officials. Unsurprisingly, that announcement was met with a great deal of pushback. Carville even urged the DNC to sue Hogg and referred to the 25-year-old as a “contemptible little twerp.” The money will be raised through the grassroots organization Leaders We Deserve, which Hogg serves as president of.
After days of indirect mudslinging, the two faced off on The Tara Palmeri Show to discuss Hogg’s plan and the future of the party:
HOGG: In the past, there had been vice chairs previously who had done exactly what I am doing now, where they supported people in primaries while they were vice chairs of the DNC, while they were out there; and part of the reason that is not a conflict of interest is because there isn’t information that we have access to that could sway these elections in any serious way. What the DNC has a rollover is specifically the presidential election; and in our bylaws, it does say you cannot be involved in the primary process and I completely agree with that — completely. I do not want to repeat a 2016 here, but the fact of the matter is, James, there have been vice chairs previously who have done very similar things.
CARVILLE: I don’t understand. You’re not going to raise money to run against Democrats, or you are going to raise to run against Democrats?
HOGG: We are, we can do–
CARVILLE: You’re going to do that?
HOGG: We are raising money–
CARVILLE: You’re going to do that? That is an ethical abomination.
HOGG: James, you have the understand the nuance here–
CARVILLE: There’s no nuance to it. It’s just flat out wrong! It’s flat out wrong to use money that could be used to beat other Republicans to beat Democrats.
HOGG: What is your plan to deal with our abominable approval ratings?
CARVILLE: Win elections! Win elections, you see, against Republicans! Don’t do — let me finish. You want my strategy? It is to win elections. It’s not to win an election in Queens, OK, which you don’t ever run against a Republican. It is to help Democrats win elections, which — by the way, I called on Joe Biden to drop out of the race in 2022. Where were you? Where was the young, cool generation coming? Did they step in to say something? I spoke out against the horrific language of identity politics. Where was everybody else? I said we should have a contested convention. No one else came — other than President Obama, who was trying to call people on the day that Biden dropped out. I’m just saying, I want to beat Republicans. I don’t want to beat Democrats. That’s my life mission.
HOGG: I wanted to beat Republicans as well; and what I’ll say, James, is imagine if we didn’t Hakeem Jeffries right now, who got here primarying Democrats multiple times. Imagine–
CARVILLE: Primary who he wants! The DNC shouldn’t raise money to be involved in a democratic primary!
HOGG: This is not the DNC.
CARVILLE: Bill Clinton was involved in a primary. Barack Obama was involved in a primary. I don’t have any problems with that, son! What I got a problem with is an official of the Democratic Party raising money to beat other Democrats!
HOGG: But you didn’t have a problem with it in the past when former vice chairs were doing that, as well.
