How the Teenage T. Rex Was Discovered: A Remarkable Accident
According to a press release from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the fossil was recovered over the course of a year, with the assistance of museum experts and the original discoverers.
The fossil was discovered in July 2022 when Sam Fisher, a father, took his sons Jessin (12), Liam (9), and their 11-year-old cousin Kaiden Madsen for a hike in the North Dakota Badlands. Little did they know, they were about to uncover a rare and incredibly well-preserved fossil.
While many dinosaur fossils have been uncovered by professional paleontologists, this discovery is unique because it was found by amateur fossil hunters—a trio of curious boys.
After finding the remains, Fisher, who knew Tyler Lyson, a curator of paleontology at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, contacted him for assistance.
“ These boys have made an incredible dinosaur discovery that advances science and deepens our understanding of the natural world,” explained Dr. Lyson. “I’m excited for Museum guests to dig into the “Teen Rex Discovery” experience, which I think will inspire the imagination and wonder, not only our community, but around the world!”
How Big Was It?
Scientists were able to determine the age of the T. rex using several advanced techniques, including the analysis of bone histology and growth patterns.
By examining the dinosaur’s tibia (shin bone), which measured 82 cm, they concluded that this T. rex was likely a teenager when it died. In comparison, adult T. rex tibias can reach lengths of up to 112 cm, which helped scientists estimate the juvenile’s size.
At the time of its death, the Teen Rex would have been about 25 feet long, 10 feet tall, and weighed around 3,500 pounds. This is significantly smaller than fully grown adults, which could reach up to 40 feet in length and weigh up to 8,000 pounds.
Why Is the Teenage T. Rex Fossil So Rare?
Finding juvenile T. rex fossils is exceptionally rare. Most discoveries are of fully grown T. rex specimens, which are much larger and more easily identifiable due to their size and structure.
This juvenile fossil will provide paleontologists with key data on how T. rex developed and grew, including insights into its diet, behavior, and overall health during its teenage years.

Premiering on June 21 at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science’s Infinity Theater, the documentary promises to take viewers on an immersive journey into the world of T. rex.
Using state-of-the-art CGI and the latest paleontological insights, the film will provide a vivid look at the life of one of the most famous dinosaurs to ever roam the Earth.
This exhibit, set to open on June 21 at 1:30 p.m., will allow visitors to explore the find up close and learn more about the paleontological significance of this rare discovery.
