The takes were anonymous from an NFL assistant coach and multiple front-office sources on the Colorado quarterback.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — One longtime NFL assistant coach is not a fan of Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders and let NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero know about it for an article posted Tuesday evening on the top 18 prospects in this year’s quarterback class.
Pelissero kept his sources anonymous, but cited multiple people within the league who did not provide glowing remarks.
“The worst formal interview I’ve ever been in in my life,” the assistant coach told Pelissero. “He’s so entitled. He takes unnecessary sacks. He never plays on time. He has horrible body language. He blames teammates. … But the biggest thing is, he’s not that good.”
Pelissero included positive reaction, including one NFC quarterbacks coach who called him a “talented passer,” but noted he does not think Sanders has elite arm strength.
The negativity jumped out.
Pelissero also cited a longtime AFC executive, who said their interview with Sanders didn’t go well.
“He wants to dictate what he’s going to do and what’s best for him. He makes you feel small,” the executive told Pelissero.
An NFC GM added that he prefers Mississippi’s Jaxson Dart after evaluating last season’s tape between the quarterbacks.
Schrager picks Sanders to Steelers
New ESPN analyst Peter Schrager, formerly of NFL Network, projected Sanders to the Pittsburgh Steelers with the No. 21 pick in his mock draft released Wednesday.
“I know Sanders had a good meeting in Pittsburgh when he visited a few weeks back,” Schrager wrote. “I also know the Steelers still don’t have a QB1 on their roster. This might be viewed as a slip down the board for Sanders. He could go anywhere from No. 3 to the Giants to the second round.”
Schrager also maintained on the Pat McAfee Show that, “The Giants haven’t closed the door” on taking Sanders at No. 3.
A pick still for the Browns?
Analyst Marc Ross, a former front-office personnel member with the New York Giants, predicted the Browns will still take Sanders with the No. 2 pick.
“It’s been almost unanimously assumed during the pre-draft process that Cleveland will select either edge rusher Abdul Carter or two-way player Travis Hunter with the second overall pick,” he wrote among an NFL.com feature on bold predictions from its staff. “However, early on Thursday night, the Browns provide a shocker when they take QB Shedeur Sanders in that spot.”
Falcons GM dismisses Cousins request
After reports surfaced that the Atlanta Falcons want teams to pay $20 million of Kirk Cousins’ remaining salary in a trade, general manager Terry Fontenot dismissed that notion, according to NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe.
“Fontenot says the draft could provide more clarity on potential trade but it’s ‘not accurate’ they’ve asked teams to pay $20 million+ of Cousins salary for deal,” Wolfe wrote on the social media platform X.
Cousins reported Tuesday to the start of Atlanta’s voluntary offseason program. He lost the starting quarterback job last season to then-rookie Michael Penix Jr.
Chiefs interested in TreVeyon Henderson?
If Ohio State’s TreVeyon Henderson sneaks into the first round, it could be with the Kansas City Chiefs. They conducted a conference call with him on Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Henderson is projected as a second-round pick, but considering the Chiefs have selections late in rounds — No. 63 overall in the second round — they could potentially use their No. 31 pick on him.
“Henderson is considered a riser,” Fowler wrote, “and the Chiefs, who could be looking for more explosion in the backfield, are doing late homework on the position.”
Henderson rushed for 3,761 yards and 42 touchdowns on 590 carries at Ohio State and no lost fumbles.
