The Cubs win another one-run game against the Dodgers and take the mini sweep!
THAT’S A SWEEP! A SMALL ONE, BUT A SWEEP! I’M COUNTING IT! It also means the Cubs take the season series from the Dodgers 4-3, despite playing just two of those games at Wrigley Field. Suck it.
Host to a one-run lead, Pete Crow-Armstrong led off the 8th with a single, his third hit of the night. He stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. So that’s an insurance run there at third base to open the inning, with nobody out. But Carson Kelly walked, Jon Berti struck out, and Ian Happ grounded into a double-play.
In years past, missing out on a golden insurance run like that – with Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts looming in the 9th – might’ve spelled doom. But these Cubs are not those Cubs.
… I mean, it helps that Porter Hodge got the 9th and once again looked like an absolute beast. (I wonder if Ryan Pressly is dinged right now. Hodge pitched last night, and nevertheless stepped in again.)
Speaking of these Cubs, they just keep fighting, man. The Dodgers scored, the Cubs scored back. The Dodgers did it again, the Cubs did it again. It must be annoying as heck to other teams.
Matthew Boyd really wasn’t all that bad, but the Dodgers (not unlike the Cubs) are just going to wring every last little bit out of you. If you make a small mistake and leave a little opening, they’re going to pounce, because so many guys in that lineup can hurt you. Hey, thanks to his own throwing error, he technically got a Quality Start!
Pete Crow-Armstrong is the Ankin Law “Making it Personal” Player of the Game for his four RBI night, with another homer and two singles (and two stolen bases). You already know it, but I just want to add that PCA is so good defensively. He is out there every night taking away hits and you barely notice because he makes tough plays look so easy.
Julian Merryweather has been mostly really boring this year, and that’s the best compliment I can give a 2025 Cubs reliever.
