LUCAS, Texas — A Collin County middle schooler tested positive for measles, the first known case in a child in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, Collin County Health Care Services confirmed Tuesday.
Health officials confirmed one case of measles involving a student who attends Willow Springs Middle School in Lucas, part of Lovejoy Independent School District. According to data from Texas Health and Human Services, 95% of seventh graders in Lovejoy ISD received an MMR vaccine in the 2023-2024 school year.
It’s unclear if the student was vaccinated. Due to the patient’s age, no additional information will be released, health officials said. It’s also unclear if the case is linked to the warning Collin County health officials previously issued on April 18 about a person who tested positive for measles and visited three stores, including a Walmart, in Plano while still infectious.
The case announced Tuesday was the first known case of a child contracting the disease in the Metroplex.
Two cases previously reported in Rockwall County both involved adults, officials said.
Four cases of measles, including at least one child, were announced in March by the Paris-Lamar County Health District, which is located northeast of DFW.
The Texas Department of State Health Services reported 624 cases of measles in the state of Texas on Wednesday morning. The number of cases, mostly from the January West Texas outbreak, increased by 27, the state department said.
The main measles outbreak has been in the South Plains region of West Texas. Most of the cases have been among unvaccinated children. Two children in Lubbock have died from the virus, health officials said.
