KENTUCKY, USA — Two cities in Kentucky are among the top 100 U.S. cities with the highest rates of Sexually Transmitted Illnesses (STI) this year, according to a recent study.
The City of Lexington has the highest rate of STIs in Kentucky, ranking 24th overall in the country, according to a study by Innerbody.com.
Lexington had 1,169 STI cases per 100,000 residents, 2,919 Chlamydia cases, 1,622 Gonorrhea cases, 223 Syphilis cases and 109 HIV cases, according to numbers from the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) latest STI Surveillance Statistics.
Though Lexington had the highest rate of STIs in Kentucky, another city in the Bluegrass State had more cases overall.
The only other Kentucky city to make the list of the top 100 U.S. cities with the highest rates of STIs was Louisville, known for hosting the Kentucky Derby every year.
Louisville ranked 59th with 819 cases per 100,000 residents, 7,462 Chlamydia cases, 3,328 Gonorrhea cases, 313 Syphilis cases and 216 HIV cases.
Cities in the U.S. South account for over 60% of the top 25 metropolitan areas with the highest STI rates in this year’s study, with Louisiana home to three of the 25 cities with the highest STI rates and Florida home to two cities in the top 25.
